X-Men Cake, September 2019

Hi everyone! I know it’s been a couple of weeks but I had something amazing up my sleeve. Remember when I went to St Albans’ Comic Con this year? I met a lovely lady there named Anna, from Lush Layers by Anna. She contacted me from that blog and asked if I wanted to collaborate. I said of course I did! We began spit balling some ideas for what to do together – how could comics and cake come together?

Then we both discovered each other’s love for X-Men, and not just any X-Men but the 90s cartoon. You know the one. The one that’s my ring tone… Oh, you know it! Look let me just play you the theme song…

There remember now?

Anyway, we were unsure of what to do until we sat down to do it! Anna knew which recipe to pick immediately – Link for that here. It’s a moist and gooey chocolate cake, made with avocado instead of egg! Yes, ladies and gents – this cake is completely vegan.
Anyway, there are pictures of our process down below!

When I say this is the best cake I have ever eaten, I really mean that. It is the best cake I have ever eaten. Even my mum loved it – it’s chocolatey and creamy and delicious. The chocolate frosting is moreish, and not sickly in any way. Avocados are definitely the way forward for any cake.

I will be going to Anna for every cake I need! Find her info here! Go on and give her some love! Not only did I get an amazing cake from this, but I have made a new geeky friend! Thank you so much, Anna! Everyone loves the cake – it’s amazing!

Can you guess which X-Men we put on our cake? What other collabs can Anna and I do together? Leave a comment down below!

Marvel’s X-Men Gold #1 and the Controversy Around it

Sorry for the missing post last week! Thing’s have gotten hectic at the Library – it’s the Easter holidays so lots of people have come in! So firstly let me apologise for that. However, when I was thinking about what to post, something bad hit the comic book world. The artist for X-Men Gold Issue #1 has come under fire for antisemitic references, hidden in the art of the comic.

X-Men Gold, a splinter team of the original X-Men, lead by Kitty Pryde; known for the power of intangibility (or the ability to phase through solid objects). X-Men Gold #1 was her first comic as leader, and unfortunately she has become included in the disaster that now surrounds it.
A brief summary of the events are as follows. Ardian Syaf, the artist of X-Men Gold #1 referenced a verse from the Koran and the date of a Jakarta protest, all hidden quite well in the artwork. The Koran verse, 5:51, states something along the lines of “Oh you who believe, take not the Jews and the Christians as leaders/advisers.” The Jakarta protest is a Muslim protest against their Christian governor Ahok.

Here’s the full statement from Marvel Comics; “Marvel has terminated Ardian Syaf’s contract effective immediately. ‘X-Men Gold’ #2 and #3 featuring his work have already been sent to the printer and will continue to ship bi-weekly. Issues #4, #5, and #6 will be drawn by R. B. Silva and issues #7, #8, and #9 will be drawn by Ken Lashley. A permanent replacement artist will be assigned to ‘X-Men Gold’ in the coming weeks.”

Now this is all my own opinion – I am unsure what to think about this. I am very much of two minds. Though I understand fighting against tyrants, and am fully for being inclusive and what Governor Ahok did was wrong, I do not agree with the way Syaf has gone about it. Just putting it in a comic book about being inclusive (the X-Men date back to the times of Luther King and Malcom X, and the fight of blacks Vs whites) I don’t agree with the antisemitic way that it this has all taken place. I think placing it any other comic wouldn’t have been so damming for Syaf, but a comic that is all about living peacefully together in an unpeaceful word? That was not the way to go. It’s unfortunate he probably won’t work in the comics industry ever again, his art is very good, but after this I don’t think he deserves to work in such an inclusive business. All in all, I’m glad that Marvel are firing Syaf for his actions. I just hope this doesn’t tarnish Marvel more than they already have been.

Have you read X-Men Gold? Will you after all this? Do you have the super rare Issue 1, with all the references in them? Do you believe they were antisemitic? Leave a comment below!

‘Logan… I have to pee’ – Marvel’s Logan, is it as good as everyone says it is?

I ventured out of the library last night to go see Logan. The question I had when I left was ‘Is it as good as everyone says it is?’ The simple answer to this is YES. You can leave now, you don’t have to read the rest. In fact, go and watch it, ASAP.

Oh…you’re still here, right…I should get down to my review then…

X-23 and Logan holding hands – Logan, Fox 2017

In the near distant future, mutants are basically non-existent. They’ve been wiped out by a mixture of an incident that Charles caused and the laboratory Transigen – part of the same company that put the adamantium into Logan’s bones. It is important to point out that Logan and Charles are getting old; Charles is a ‘nonagenarian’ and Logan is starting to be poisoned by the adamantium, causing him to not be able to heal the way that he used to – each time he is forced to use his healing powers he gets sicker.

X-23 (or Laura) comes into this in a very unusual manner. Logan is working as a chauffeur, driving a rather nice limo for movie-moguls, hen nights and prom goers. He has Charles locked away (I think for his own safety?), being cared for by Caliban – a mutant-hunting mutant. X-23 comes along from the Transigen Lab program (a mutant with the same powers as Logan), and bam, Logan has to try to be the Wolverine again, except this time he’s actually capable of dying.

Cool guys don’t look at…sunsets? – Logan, Fox 2017

This movie made me have feels. Many feels. So many feels that I cried twice during it. All the feels. Though, I cry about a lot of things – I am a very emotional person. As a Librarian this is pretty counter productive to my job – I have to tell myself to shush!

Don’t go into this movie expecting it to be a superhero movie. It’s more a character development plot, with fighting badassness on the side. Though, saying that, I don’t think the movie would work without the fighting; the fights are a show of Logan, Charles and Laura’s character development. The fights bring them all together.

I really think everyone should watch this movie. I give it a solid 5 star rating. It’s absolutely amazing.

Below is the trailer for the film, just to get you wanting more!
