‘We get many letters asking, “Can I fight like Oni?” No, no you cannot! … Sorry.’ – Agents of Mayhem, 2017

Hey everyone! How has your week been? Mine’s been full of writing a dissertation and enjoying the heatwave! Who knew that a lido would be like being on holiday, who needs Spain when you have the British summer, ‘ey?
@sebonthesilvermountain has been with me, as said last week, so whilst I was writing he was playing games. Game of choice this time has been Agents of Mayhem, made by the people who made the Saints Row franchiseWithout further ado, here’s my (perhaps our?) thoughts!

Franchise Force in full view; Hollywood, Fortune and Hardtack – Agents of Mayhem, Deep Silver, 2017

Agents of Mayhem is an open world adventure (much like it’s Saints Row predecessor) The game takes place in a Seoul, the city of the future. The game features twelve agents, which are comprised in four trios: the Bombshells (Italian engineer Joule, Indian immunologist Rama, and German football hooligan Red Card); the Carnage a Trois (American field strategist Braddock, American derby driver Daisy, and Russian “Cold Warrior” Oleg Kirlov under the alias “Yeti”); the Firing Squad (American gang leader Pierce Washington under the alias “Kingpin”, Japanese hitman Oni, and Middle Eastern assassin Scheherazade); and the Franchise Force (Colombian former sky pirate Fortune, United States Navy chief petty officer Hardtack, and Canadian actor and proclaimed “Face of Mayhem” Hollywood). Three additional agents are provided via DLC – Seoul police lieutenant Johnny Gat; Moroccan soldier Fatima Daoud, also known as “Lazarus”; and genius hacker Kinzie Kensington, under the alias “Safeword”.

Seb and I really enjoyed Agents of Mayhem. Whilst, yes, it wasn’t Saints Row, which really upset a lot of people, it was a pretty good game. The writing was funny, the gameplay was immersive. There was the ability to change squad members to be your own, and match your gameplay style; the use of gadgets and legion tech allow the player to tailor to how they want to play. I liked the guns ablazing characters (Daisy and Braddock) whilst Seb was into the close fire and melee damage ones (Yeti and Oni).
Some of these names of characters will be familiar with Saints Row players. This is because this game is set in an alternate reality, where the player character of Saints never existed, but the secondary characters did. Instead of being scouted by the player character (who becomes the President of the USA) they are scouted by Persephone, the leader of the Agents of Mayhem.

It felt like Saints Row, in the story telling and game play. The only thing that’s missing is the multiplayer. That’s the thing that upset people. And it honestly feels like multiplayer should have been a part of it. There’s a few things that give this away. The extra squad bonuses (of extra XP etc.) show that a squad should have been you and a friend, and not you swapping characters yourself.

Honestly, give this game a go! If you liked Saints Row you’ll like this game. It’s very similar. This game got bad stick for no reason. We both liked it enough to complete it and look for all of the outfits etc.

Have you played Agents of Mayhem? Or even Saints Row? Did you like either of them or not? Leave a comment down below!
